from your guys experience how sensitive are these guys to water conditions? im looking at getting some and was reading up on them. some sites said that if the ph or water hardness aint right they wont tolerate it.

I find they very sensitive. They require soft, warm water. Ph is not important, hardness is. For them to do really well and live long you almost have to treat them like Discus.

well my water is a little on the harder side but my dechlorinator removes heavy metals and all that, does this soften the water?

Unfortunately no. You can use an RO unit or use Peat in your filter to soften water.

i know stability is important with ph but is it safe for the fish to soften the water?

I was told if you got a fish from a lfs with the same water source as you, that(unless theres a huge difference) the ph and water hardness didn`t mather since the fish has been in the same water for so long.

well it wouldnt be bought from a lfs, i cant find any store thay keeps them so i think its gonna have to be ordered from liveaquaria.com
thats why im so concerned with all this. also its more difficult for me to go by what the lfs water is because i think the base may have a separate water source

You might have to look fo ranother site since liveaquaria requires a minimum amount of money spent to order.

i know, we already planned on ordering other types of fish so were already above the minimum fee, but im not concerned with them since they seemed hardier

i just want to make sure i can give suitable conditions for a blue ram

blue rams are cool, when they try to look tough they have that mohawk thing going on and they turn that cool blue lol.
