Was just surfing Bluegrass aquatics and saw this. I don't think I have ever seen a fish quite this expensive before :ssuprised: This farm is about an hour from house, im tempted to ask if I can give them $10 just to look at it for a few minutes :hmm3grin2orange:

If that fish is really as rare as the link says then they are doing a disservice to the species. They should either have released it upon catching it, or they should make an attempt to sell it to someone who already has one.

sounds like it's a very rare color morph rather than an endangered species or something, like catching a blue lobster. If that's the case they're not helping or hurting the species by catching and selling one specimen.

yes, it's a rare colour morph. not worth 15k IMO, but a nice fish nonetheless. extremely rare to find them in the wild because they would have been easy prey when small.

It is a rare morph. Golden gars hits the market every now and then. That is far from the best specimen I have seen and based on that I think that it is overpriced. If it looked like the one below than maybe:

The site does say offers would be considered. I have met the owner of the farm and they are definitely cichlid specialists so there's a good change they are just taking a shot in the dark with the price.

I'm not surprised at all w/ the price and I have actually known someone who owned one. Most of the time they are just a color variation of the Florida Gar although this morph can occure in any gar species.

A few years back, there was a Platinum Alligator Gar that was reportedly sold for around $1 Million.

I believe they can go through color changes throughout their lives...I think that may be why the above specimen has the black blotches on it. It may still turn completely gold or the black may stay. It may be a type of paradoxing or piebaldism.

Nice fish either way! Thanks for sharing.

I heard they had to lower the Platinum Alligator Gar considerable from that asking price before it actually sold. Kind of like they had to lower the original asking price for snowy (lungfish).

Platinum gars are being bred these days arent they. Kind of expect golds to be soon as well.
