View Full Version : pH Levels too High

Ok, as our tap water pH levels have increased can anyone recommend the safest way to drop them as if I do a water change it's stressing my krbis out quite severly. I've tried pH 7 regulator stuff to bring it down before putting it in - that's not working (LFS recommended that). I've added more wood to the tank as well - but some of these guys are going very black and gasping lots.
Any help with this water issue would be appreciated.

Easiest way is to mix tap with distilled water til you get the pH you're after. Store the water in rubber trashcans that have locking lids. Brand here is Rubbermaid. I've no idea what it is in Oz.

What does storing the water do?
Cheers!

When you mix tap and distilled, you do it at a specific ratio. You want to store water so you don't have to mix more every time you do a partial water change.

What kind of levels are you talking about that your pH increased? Like a lot or just a point or two.

I don't have any bins or anything to store water in & unfortunately don't have spare funds to purchase anything either. Our tap water is way up, I don't know exactly but as soon as I test it it goes a deep blue colour straight away. I can't afford to be purchasing distilled water either as it gets really expensive, is there no easier way? This water is killing off my kribs quite quickly.

Only thing I can think of is peat in your filter. Don't know if you have PUR tap water filters there, but it'll produce water suitable for the kribs.
Know how you feel; liquid concreate comes out of my tap. I mix it 70-30 reverse osmosis/dionized water to tap. If I didn't have RO/DI units, I couldn't keep 90 percent of the fish I do.

Thanks very much (AGAIN)! I'll probably look into peat might be the easiest way to go. Lost 2 more yesterday so it's getting really frustrating.

Another possibility, if you want to do a lot of work, is to make a DIY CO2 system. Ask in the DIY forum. Peat might only drop your pH a point or two.

Thank you I'll check it out.

I read somewhere on a review site, a good pH decrease formula is actually made by topfin. Just looked it up again on Petsmart.com to make sure that was right, it also has a 5 star review from a "Top 100 Reviewer". Its not too expensive either.
But for the long run, like Dave said, a PUR filter might help a lot. You could probably find some pretty cheap on ebay or another online site.
Goodluck with your fish!

I think this thread would be ok for me to post my question.
After my fish being in thier new tank for a few weeks my pH has suddenly dropped to 7.4 or lower.
It was at a consistant 8.0 for the past few weeks and all i have been doing is one water change weekly.
Any ideas as to why this is?

I have no idea...i'm having the opposite problem. I did a test for my pH today...dont do it often enough I guess. But all my tanks are at 6.....I dunno if thats a good thing or not....

Hmmm Im not sure why it would have dropped so suddenly. I did ask if it would decline slowly after the coral i have was in the tank for a while. I was told it would be such a slight change it wouldnt harm the fish. But the drop in like 2 days from 8.0 to 7.4 worries me. I guess i will wait for Dave66 to come answer:P He should know something about it :)
