Any suggestions for a newbie? I've been researching, posting and lurking on this website for almost three months, and wonder if there's something worth buying.

Thanks!

Generally nothing from a standard pet store and very little from most libraries.
Too many of the standard pet books are cut and paste text with just the pictures changed from species to species. Sometimes from dog to cat, even.

Search out breeders who show and win - and sell on line.
You'll still get mixed advice, but it will be accurate for that breeder.
Ideally go to a beta show and do a lot of listening. Unfortunately you'll probably come home with more fish than you had planned for, even if you weren't planning on any. ;-)

Here is a good place to start looking for breeders.

Breeders -- wow, I never would have thought of that. Thanks for the tip!
