i know that axolotls are amphibians not fish but was hoping someone could help me anyways. a friend of mine has some freshly laid axolotl eggs and im going to try and raise them once they hatch.
i have a little tank cycling for them, it holds about 15 litres of water (ill upsize them to a bigger tank if im successful in raising them), the water temp is a constant 20C with a small HOB filter. the gravel is small but im wondering whether id be better off with a bare bottom for hygienic reasons?
does anyone know how long they will take to hatch and what do i feed the babies?
any ideas or information would be greatly appreciated.

They eat small crustaceans and insect larvae. You could try frozen Daphnia and mosquito larvae to see if they'll take them. If you have cyclops-eeze there, it'll make those frozen foods more attractive.

The water should be cold, around 65-68 degrees F. I dont know what 20 C equates to though.

cool. i dont wanna ask the LFS as i had baby axolotls like 4 yrs ago and the babies didnt eat the food they recommended and the advice i got wasnt reliable- all the babies died. i really want to do it right this time. axolotls are heaps cool and id love to watch them grow up :1luvu:
do you guys think that the tank set up sounds alright?

Ninja post, as defined by urban dicitonary
When posting on a forum, you submit a post only to find that someone has posted the same thing only seconds earlier.
If i am on the latter half of the ninja post, i feel the need to state it, so i dont look like an idiot.
How big are the axolotl eggs now?
And how big are they when they hatch?
How many?

im not sure how many eggs there are as i havent actually seen them. i dont even know what colour the parents are (the eggs were laid in a tank of lots of different coloured adults).i think they got laid either yesterday or the day before?

Do you have any books on them?
I have not raised any from that small, I got my current ones at about 1-2" (can't remember now, they grew so fast) so I have no strong opinions on what works better than other things. Many times newly born individuals only take live. You may want to look through posts in the axolotl section on caudata.org. You may need to make a post asking the question, but you may be able to do a search and find the info you need without posting yourself.
20C is fine. Mine are about there, a little higher, and growing like weeds.

hmmm I wonder if you were given the same advice from your LFS as what i was given from the guy who sold me my axylotles. He told me to feed them ox heart and to twirl it round on a stick in front of their faces so they know its there.
After i think a week both had died for no clear reason to me...

well i got the eggs last night all fully attached to a plant and all. there are around 20 eggs in the jelly mass, and there is a white spot in the centre of each egg (the developing embryo).
i dont know how long they will take to hatch but maybe a couple of weeks??? im not sure if i should do water changes now or wait till they hatch and start eating food???
ill do some more research
