View Full Version : Building a large aquarium

I am designing an aquarium 8 Ft. by 8 Ft. and 3 Ft. deep. I was planning a plexiglass bottom and glass sides. I need to know how to make this work. This will be a salt water aquarium. I got a good idea on the base to put on but keeping this big thing together is another story. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Look at the 'DIY Tank' threads on the 'Monsterfishkeeper' forum for HEAPS of ideas. [If you are serious,] You have a plywood build in your future.

I said this to the last person who came here claiming to be building a mega-tank. Do you really have the hundreds of thousands of dollars it's going to take to get a tank this size up and running? If so, don't you think maybe you should get a professional involved rather than polling some folks on the internet?

plexiglass and glass won't bond together well. you're going to have to look into a plywood build and 'frame off' your viewing windows. it's the cheapest, most reliable option for a tank that size.

I will be building this tank in the Philipines. Prices are allot cheaper there. Thinking of using sea water to fill this.

Plywood aquarium good ida thank you but now the question is Will a plexigass bottom and glass sides work. Plexiglass would make it easier for me to cut holes for the filter ans water return. Cutting holes in glass brings up a hole other set of problems. If i use plexiglass sides how would i keep the plexiglass clean without scratching it.. Thank you for the ideas so far, really appreciate it.

the bottom would be plywood coated with a waterproofing material (example, pond armour). you can easily install bulkheads and/or drains this way. the only glass would be your viewing windows. you could have one window, or multiple windows depending on your plans.

I am building a 1kg plywood tank at diyfishkeepers.com. Look in the DIY section for 1kg build and follow along. Might be able to give me some ideas. Am always looking for input.
