:19: Hello, I am planning on getting a pleco for my 10gallon tank. Do they need driftwood to survive?

Hello, For some plecs it is an important part of their diet, Some don't NEED it but most all like it to hide under and many munch on stuff that grows on it.

The bigger question is this: Have you researched plecs requirements because IMO there is not a single commonly available plec suitable for a 10g tank.

Common pleco's need it and it's part of their diet but they do not belong in 10 gallon tanks either.

10 gallons are even too small for corys. Better rethink that.

The smallest fish I've found that looks more or less like a pleco, and is obtainable with a bit of work, is Ancistrus Clarus. Even that would only be in a 10 gallon as a breeding tank and would normally live in a 15-20 gallon.

All ancistrus need wood, most plecos need at least an occasional bit of wood which is why the better pleco waffers contain some wood.

Anyone buying anything bottom dwelling from south america I'd advice to take pictures and check planet catfish before purchasing, fish stores make a right mess of identifying these species.
