I asked this question in another thread, but it's buried in there, so I thought I'd make a new one.

I bought some cherry shrimp from a local breeder. He threw in a quantity of pure sodium thiosulfate crystals for use as a dechlorinator.

According to my research, one dissolves 1 gram of the crystals into 1 liter of water to make dechlorinator. 1 drop of this solution is enough to dechlorinate 1 to 2 gallons of water. I have 118 grams of the crystals. So...

1 liter has 20,000 drops, and I can make 118 liters. That is enough to dechlorinate 2,360,000 gallons of water at 1 drop per gallon.

I have attached a pic of the crystals.

Thoughts?

Thoughts?

Nice dealer but perhaps not the best product for you.

You worked out the mats, you can try it. Alternative is to hand in the stuff at your local recycling depot and buy a bottle of aquasafe or something.

I use it, it was the active ingredient in the Genesis I used for years until the company went out of business. I picked up some of the crystals last year, probably have almost a lifetime supply now. It doesn't bind ammonia, so if your tap water contains chloramine using a simple dechlor will release the ammonia, but I've never had any problems from that.

Call your water supplier and ask if they use chloramines or products that create chloramines. If yes, switch to something like Prime, Safe (the dry form of Prime) or Chloram-X.
Those are the most effective and cost effective products on the market for both chlorine and chloramines.
