I came home to my beautiful 24 gal shrimp tank to find that my darling husband had dumped AlgaeQuel (used in our other tank) into the tank.. almost all of my shrimp are dead! It says on the website to not use for shrimp, but I want to know how to start over. Should I remove all the water to get rid of the chemical? Or is 50% water change enough?

I would immediately get the shrimp out of that water. You'll have to do a very large water change if not two right in a row. And run carbon for a few days.

Shrimp are out. Husband is changing water as we speak. He feels terrible and has promised to fix it. What in the Algae Quel is toxic, just out of curiosity?

Well based on their website, the ingredients include:

Poly(oxyethylene) (dimethyliminio) ethylene (dimethyliminio)ethylene dichloride and something else (maybe just water to make a solution)

Website here: http://www.novalek.com/kordon/algaequel/index.htm

Their MSDA sheet is apparently a broken link, but here is a related product's MSDS: http://www.alken-murray.com/340msd.htm (Ingredients for them is the above solution and water)

And info from a pesticide info site: http://www.pesticideinfo.org/Detail_Chemical.jsp?Rec_Id=PC34167

Both of the last two mention it can be toxic to most aquaria including mollusks and fish. It probably depends on the dosage amount.
