Hi, I have a still fairly active dropsical guppy and a platy with part of her arm fin missing - probably fungus - there is a whitish line on the edge. They are both living in my 10 gal fry tank. I'm currently limited to pimafix for the fungus until payday. If I'm treating the whole tank for fungus, will that be safe for the fry? What do you suggest for the guppy? Is she like to infect the fry?
Please help, I know dropsy is usually terminal, but I want her to be comfortable for as long as possible and I don't want to hurt the fry.

Well if you've got a fish with fungus in the same tank as the fry, I imagine the pimafix would'nt be much worse. Pimafix is natural also, so that helps...as opposed to other stronger meds.
I don't think dropsy is contagious, but I think there have been people that have treated dropsy sucessfully with maracyn-2 (?)

I really would like to hear about Maracyn 2 and other dropsy treatments. I'm a little nervous about how antibiotics might affect the gills. I had heard about that when I had shubunkin gold fish with dropsy who eventually got breathing problems and died. That could have been due to having dropsy and water issues, but I'd like to hear more before I try it.
I do have another 10 gallon I could set up as a hospital tank, but don't know where to put it. Maybe Saturday.
The guppy hasn't gotten real bloated, but she still has that scary white poop along with the regular kind. I just think it's dropsy because the scales on her belly seem to stick out a little. I can't say she's a very strong swimmer - like under the filter outlet and she has to rest on the gravel, but she's still a good eater.
The red platy is doing much better. Lots more pep today and appetite!

PM SkarloeysMom, her Betta, Skarloey had dropsy I think a year or two ago she said, and was successful with treatments. You can PM her and ask her what she did. I dont have any experience with dropsy, I just have heard about successful treatments with the maracyn 2

Is your fish getting really fat or does it have raised scales? They also stop eating when they get drospy. From the symptoms you mentioned it doesn't sound like dropsy.
But here's the info and treatment I used when my Betta had dropsy [Only Registered Users Can See Links.] a year and a half ago. I used Maracyn-2 instead of the med. they mention and followed the rest of their recommendations and it worked very quickly.
Good Luck! I hope you're fish recovers quickly and doesn't infect your fry.

I think it may be some other kind of bacterial infection. Betsy has never really gotten that bloated and she's eating though she still gets that stringy poop. She seems to have plenty of energy and her breathing is OK. Not hanging at the the top or panting. I don't know what to make of the scales appearing to stick out on her belly. It may be that I'm used to pregnant female guppys whose belly scales are stretched to the max.
Betsy has never been a boy magnet, though I think she's a pretty fish. I have a one or two month old with a twisted tail and she has a gravid spot. I call her Twisted Sister. Betsy- they seem to overlook.
Vickie the platy with the busted fin seems to be all full of energy tonight, though yesterday she had the same stringy stuff. I haven't been able to get antibiotics, and I might just continue with the pimafix and a little salt and see how that goes. I have been informed that my PH was too low and took the suggestion of adding a 1/4 tsp of baking soda.

I lost Betsy the guppy last night. She died after a water change that appeared to frighten her more than usual and I guess the stress was too much. When I was able to look at her body more closely, I saw that she had a big rip in her skin. I suppose it got infected and she never quite recovered, even with the Maracyn 2. Vicky the platy is doing great and back in the big tank.
Twisted Sister is growing into a beautiful young lady. Can I assume that since no one responded to my post about her bent tail that I should not be concerned about it being a TB symptom? The tail kind of has a cute flirty look to it.
