Harlequins and....?

Hi,

Siamese is getting a bit territorial now, just killed a harlequin so he's going in an hour, back to the shop for him.

Any thoughts on what to keep with my harlequins? I'm thinking some kind of tetras, maybe neons, I need to replace the harlequin so I've got 8 again and want to put something else in to replace the betta.

Or if not a schooling fish then another single that won't get territorial?

With this being a small tank, I would just keep a school of Harleys and perhaps some cherry shrimp or an apple snail. You may be able to add 6-7 neons but are soon to be stretching the stocking level.

What about a male swordtail or something? Or you could try a female fighter.

You could try a male dwarf gourami if you want a bright centerpiece fish, they tend to bee less agressive than bettas, and are very pretty indeed.

If you don't mind just having schooling fish, I would strongly agree with what Lady Hobbs said - add more harleys. They are a lot of fun when there are a lot on them, and in a 14 gallon you can easily fit aobut 25 of the little buggers without too many problems (they are pretty slender and light on the bioload).

If you are absolutely set on getting another species of schooling fish, I am currently head-over-heels in love with emerald eye rasboras, they school very tightly and are very active and fun in my tank..

I agree to just get more harlequins. Getting two small schools sounds fun, but in the end it can just be boring. Getting more harlequins can make the tank be a nice centerpiece. Shrimp would also contribute to that.

I would get more Harlequins. Maybe get a male Dwarf Gourami. I have both in my 29g tank and they are great. After a bit of experience I have found that the minimum size school should be 10+.

I decided however to get some tetras, I do bow to your wisdom but I must also learn this hobby.

So I picked up 10 neons and added to my harlies and all is very good! Very happy with the look of the tank, they all seem very happy, the neons school, the harlies don't but I like that. The neons all swim around together and the harlies just do as they please, some of the younger ones seem to want to school with the neons!!

Assassins are laying eggs every where!!

Harlies are very randy and every day, all day there are a few that seem to be upside down under any leaf they can fit under!! :1luvu:

Water levels seem great with about 30% water changes weekly.

I did put two more plants in so 5 now and they seem good, the carpeting plant spreading nicely and they all have good new growth.

All seems to be going too well!! :hmm3grin2orange:

Assassins are laying eggs every where!!

Assassin only lay one egg at a time, it's probably a pest snail

Yep, these are single eggs, I've checked a few forums and pictures and they are deffo Assassin snail eggs. Single clear sacks with a spot inside. There are about 20 spread over various plants.
