About two months ago, I had a marigold variatus platy that had about 6 or 7 babies and then died - probably a water quality issue. At present only about two of them look like they are actually 2 months old, the rest are a variety of sizes, some looking only a week or two old.
The only other adult female I've had - up to a week ago, has been an orange wagtail platy and the only males were the orange wagtail's brother and very small sunset platy that died within a week of the variatus platy's death. None of these other platys look anything like the baby platys and the orange wagtails came from a friend's 10 gallon which has generated nothing but orange wagtail platy's.
If Patty, my orange wagtail platy had babies, I'd expect them to look just like her and her brother Pat or the sunset platy. Most of the baby platys have the goldish or rust color of the variatus platy with maybe a little tuxedo thrown in.
Is it possible for the variatus to have released babies at varying stages of development because she was sick, like a going out of business sale? Or is it more possible that Patty and Pat or the sunset had a grandparent with non wagtail genes and that's why they don't look like wagtails? Or maybe some of the babies are just not getting as much to eat and that's why they are small?
Sorry about another long rambling post. I'm just curious why I seem to be getting baby variatus platys from nowhere.
