This post has Lady Hobbs written all over it. She is our resident angel expert. Me personally I'm not sure I'd call them vicious. Specimens can however vary greatly in temperament. Lady will be along to provide more clarification though.

Lady Hobbs is the lead moderator for our "mod squad". She is well known for keeping angels. She'll give you more info whenever she gets on here.

Most of the ones I've had were mostly aggressive with each other. I have a large one now that is the only angel in a tank and hew will sometimes chase other fish away from his area - but he just chases - he doesn't try to catch the other fish.

When I have had them together in the past they would be OK for a while then wake up one day and decide it was time for the other to move out!

gm72 gave me too much credit here. I've got 9 angels and get very frustrated with them due to aggression. But as Robbie mentions, they don't kill but just constantly give chase, nip tails and spar with one another. I have only two or three that actually fight (lock lips) and oddly enough, they are a pair. My prettiest pair at that and both are very large.

Angels are very territorial. You put a few together, they will pick their mate and those two will chase, poke at, and bother other angels that come in their area. And all the others think they just have to be in THAT spot. You'd think they'd get a clue they are not wanted there. duh!

They pick who will be their mate not us. It's recommended if you want to spawn them, to get 6, let them chose a mate then separate the pair but what they don't tell you is the remaining 4 will fight as well. However, once you get the pairs figured out and put them in their own tanks (minimum of 20 gallons for two) you will have two very nice, peaceful fish.

With my original 9, I have them now separated into 4 tanks. I would not have gotten so many had I known more about them at the time. They do fine separately with other fish (watch the neons/cardinals tho) but mix-matches can be a real problem.

My large gold has taken to killing my neons so he was recently as moved.

The myth I had of keeping a large tank of angelfish went down the toilet.

They spawn every 2-3 weeks, BTW. I've had several spawns but have left the eggs with the parents and the male has always eaten them. Others let the parents raise them but for me it hasn't worked.
