A couple of months ago, one of our female swortails was getting pretty big and showed signs of being pregnant. Since we had recently removed the zebra danio fry from our fry tank, I moved her there to see if we could raise some swordtails. Well, at the end of last month, she got very large and got the tell tale box or diamond shape and seemed to be very much on the brink of bursting. I kept checking on her but never saw any fry in the tank over the next few days. Within about 2 or 3 days, though, she no longer looked plump and still no signs of fry. I can only assume they were cannibalized.
Well, we've left her in there over the past month and she is starting to look big again. We have since put a few plastic plants in the mostly bare tank (only had a small castle in it prior) to try and help give the guys some place to hide, but are there any other tips for catching the fry after birth? By catch I don't mean physically but at least notice once they are there so that the momma can be removed back into the main aquarium.
