Hello I was wondering if a spotted african leaf fish could survive in a 10 gallon tank. He would be the only fish in it. I know some people say they can because their ambush predators and just sit around all day.

No, they need at least a 30 gallon tank.

I think the important question here is can the fish thrive in a 10 gallon tank. Without a doubt it will be able to live in the tank. However, Spotted African Leaf Fish are territorial, and tend to need a large tank to stake a claim to its territory. Here (http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_Ctenopoma_acutirostre.php) is a link that explains a good deal about the fish, and it's needs in a home.
As with many fish they can survive in a smaller aquarium, but to give them the best treatment I agree with KingFisher a 30 gallon tank would be much better than a 10 gallon.
