I am upgrading my 10 to a 20. I will put the old biofiber in the tank. And same decorations etc. but was going to go with new gravel (different colour). Will this be super hard to do?

I hope I don't loose any fish. I will not put many in at first. i have an extra 10 gallon to keep some in. (that IS cycled)

I have 7 platys and one swordtail.

Thanks guys.

Nope.... just rinse off the new substrate so it's clean. The most important part of this scenario is that you transfer the media so you won't have to worrying about ruining your cycle.

Side note.... Sometimes if I do too big of a water change... my calvis die. Maybe you can use 50% of of the water to put into the 20. Having said that, the most important thing is to used your cycled media to keep your cycle going.

Good luck! thumbs2:

If you move your old filter from the old tank to the new, then you can (and should) move all your fish over at once. If you only do a part move, you will lose some BB out of the filter, as presumably the filter is already supporting the fish you have so any drop in food will also cause a drop in BB population.

You want to run the old filter alongside the new filter for a month to allow the BB to grow in the new filter.

If you add any new or extra fish to the new tank, then you need to proceed as you said and only add a couple at a time.

well I the 'new' filter is a huge step up. My old filter is just for 5-15. This new one is for 20-40 . Isn't it ok to just let the biofibre sit in the tank? (the old biofibre that is)

That will also work but do not add more fish for a couple of week. The old tank had bacteria everywhere and the new tank has bacteria no where but in that filter.

Thank you. I will sit the old biofibre in the tank and the old 'carbon filter'. Also the decorations (fake plants) are same.
