Today in an art class/center/where I work I made two caves out of clay and plan to double fire them, could using clay caves cause PH problems in a plecos tank?

Fired clay is inert and should pose no problems in your tank

Probably not the answer your looking for, but I would suggest taking just enough water to submerge one of these caves in say a zip lock baggie, have the water adjusted to the ph desired for you tank, and leave it to soak for a week... Then test the ph and see if it became more alkaline. Sorry if I'm no help... Not familiar w/ properties of clay, although I have seen many manufactured aquarium ornaments made of what I consider clay... Have you considered sealing the caves w/ anything?

As I said above, clay is inert when fired... therefore it does not require sealing of any kind.

Totally agreed.
