My two goldfish

They are in my 40 gallon community.
This is the only ranchu that lived out of the 8 (too mcuh stress between breeder and me). He was the solid orange one when I got him. The background and sand are both solid black, I have no idea why he developed black.

Nice fish. Sorry you lost some. But I dunno...I still think they do best in a large cold-water tank...I'm still amazed at how well mine are doing since I switched them to the 55g.

Actually the heater stopped working in that tank (a while ago apparently) so the community fish hadn't had a heater for a while, so I just pulled it out. So it is room temp and the tropical fish seem fine. I will probably put the heater from the discus' old tank in there though.

Yes, there are cories, loaches, barbs, tetras, killies, a bichir, etc. in there.

Both goldfish seem to love the tank, and no one bothers them, not even the rubberlip pleco. The bigger one always hides in the driftwood.

i agree, i think goldfish do better in a coldwater tank. i have always been told to never house goldfish with community fish.....since eventually the goldfish will get large and most likely attack the smaller fish.

They are in a coldwater tank. Goldfish aggression can depend on the goldfish. These are some of the slowest goldfish out there, so they are not too much of a threat. Normal bodied goldfish with normal tails would be much faster and could definitely pose a threat to small tetras.

Wow what gorgeous goldfish! I've learnt my lesson the hard way, our water temps creep up pretty high in summer so last year my black moor fought off fungus regularly, there water is back to normal and cold (though I have a heater in there in case it gets icy) and he's much happier with no more fungus problems. I just rescued another fantail and feeder which a friend had for his oscar (nope oscar didn't eat & they survived for months) so they're happy as larry in their new home.

Definitely cold is the way too go. Oh & the black - he wasn't injured was he? Mine has healed from having finrot and the lump from it started opening up on his back, it's healed & goes black then back to orange.

The black on the formerly solid orange ranchu is form the tank setup. The solid black background and sand immediately triggered the increase in black in him. But yes, new growth frequently comes in as a solid black in goldfish, only to fade over time usually.
