I have a 55 gallon tank that site one a wooden stand. The stand does not have a top.(like a table top) If i look up from inside the stand i can see the bottom of the tank. I plan on using 60 pounds of sand with rock and various hiding places for Cichlids. Is this tank stand ok for what i am planing?

Some tanks stand are built like that (with a open top I mean).

Hard to answer your question without more information about how the stand was built.

Could you post some pics maybe ? That would really help to answere your question

If they are still too large and you need to resize you can do it with this: http://www.irfanview.com/

It's safe, free, and it works.

It is very similar to this one but has doors on the front and is made out of pine.

Try either the image link or the direct link, Those should work & you can edit them right into the post before this one.

I would still need more info in order to answer your question, like did they use the same thickness of wood ?

That is a very sturdy design that would hold more weight than your 55 gallon tank set-up and filled, assuming your stand was built exactly like the first link you posted here. But that's a big if right now

Here's a few different options to post pic here that might help you post pics

The glass tanks do not need a top on the stand but acyrlic tanks do. The wrought iron stands you buy are also open tops. Just make sure all the frame on the outside is SUPPORTED on the stand.

If it bothers you, you could lay plywood over the top.

edit!!!!! supposed on the stand?????? YA RIGHT!

The weight of the aquarium is supported by the edges of the aquarium for most commerical aquarium unless you have a trimless tank. That is why it is acceptable to have iron stand with an open top. 60 lbs of sand isn't a lot of weight in the big picture. Each gallon is about 10 pounds.

Ok. Thanks for all the info. It is on a stand that was manufactured as a tank stand not home built. I have added the sand and water and a few rocks for now. Everything seems ok so far as im sure it will be.

You should start a tank journal here

I always like following the progress of a new set-up.
