Hey I was just wondering if my tank is over-stocked or not, and if you guys think it is safe to add more fish (and if so, how many.) Here's what I have in my tank right now:

2 Swordtails
9 Neon Tetras
5 Cherry Barbs
2 Gold Gouramis

I was thinking about adding Angels (maybe too risky because of the Neon's?) or something else that is not too big.

Thanks

You are correct, the neons might become lunch

What size of tank do you have ?

Two is a bad number for gouramis. Depending on tank size, 1m 2f is ideal.

I have two females right now and I am probably going to add a male.

Actually, in a 38g tank I probably wouldn't recommendations three... Gouramis get big. I would really only recommendation one.

2 Gold gouramis in a 38G is kind of a risk. though if you have a well planted tank, it might not be a problem.

If there are already 2 gouramis, i wouldn't add an angel, it will only cause trouble. If i were you, just get more of the schooling species you already have : the neon tetras and cherry barbs.

Gold gouramis as well as the 3-spot (same gourami, just different color) is the most aggressive of the gourami's. Even one will often go after other fish. I'm afraid (for me) I can find not one redeeming thing about them.

Neons are wonder little fish but when they are with other fish, they hide constantly. I'm sure yours are on the bottom hiding all the time. That's just what they do. They come from schools in the hundreds but broken up into small schools, they are timid little fish. Put them in a tank all alone and they shine for you. So.......I would probably have to say no to more of them altho big schools are great.

You can have one angelfish, if you'd like. You can also up the number of barbs .....more females than males. If you decide to pass on the angel, you can certainly add to the number of barbs plus add another school of tetra's.

Some angels kill neons, as well. And some do not. Depends on the fish but if you do want an angel, one is all you will be able to have.

Adding to what Lady Hobbs said. If you want another schooling fish I would HIGHLY recomend a school of Harlequin Rasbora!!!! (Yes I said it and no you do not need to point it out or post about it, the person I am talking about knows who I am talking about)
