Hi Everyone,
In case anyone has been wondering where I've been for the past 5 days I have been very ill, vomiting, severe abdominal pain, the whole nine. I have spent alot of my time in Dr's offices or at the ER with no one able to help me. I am so scared because they can't pin point what is causing this to keep coming back like this and it gets stronger every time(takes stronger meds to calm it) and has been going on for about 5yrs. The Dr's are stumped at this point. They ran a bunch of tests on me; Cat Scan, Ultra Sound & X rays of my abdomen, they took Blood twice, Stool samples, then after all of that I had to go get a throat culcher done for strep because my throat is red from all the vomiting I've been doing, they thought I might of had that too but nope everything they tested came back FINE!! I know something is wrong this is not something anyone should have to live with and go through every 2-6 months, so my PCP said she will not give up she wants me to go tomorrow for an Upper GI, and I am scared they said I have to drink some chalky stuff...and I cant hold anything down right now...that should be fun. They are testing me or already have for a bunch of things; H-Pye Lori(SP?), C-Diff or Biff not sure, internal Parasites(DISGUSTING) and then I had my Gaul Bladder removed a few years back and they are going to look in my "Common Duct" and see if it is clogged again or if they damaged something that could possibly make this happen. I guess my main reason for this thread is to ask all of you...My Fish-Luvin Friends to please pray for me and that they figure this out(of course only if you do pray). I just want this crap to be over!! I can't even go to work, play with my kids & pets, or even just enjoy the things I love to do daily. It has got me so depressed being trapped in my bed unable to move for five days now. I am about to just give up!! I will pop back on later if I feel up to it. Take care everyone...I hope all is well. Thanks for taking time to read this thread.
~Bonnie~

Well I just got a call from my Dr a few hours ago and she said that all my lab work came back and the blood, and stool was fine but that I do have strep throat!! I guess they test it for a few days to see if it turns out to be strep throat. Anyway she is trying to claim this is all caused by me having the strep!! Which IMO is Bull, because if it was why didn't my kids or I get this sick every other time we've had strep? I also asked is she claiming that I had strep throat every time I got sick over the years? If she is claiming that then why are they not removing my tonsils? Right? She said she still don't know right now, and nothing is for sure yet and she wants me to go for my Upper GI in the am and the rest of the other tests before she makes any decisions. I want to go look at the Mass General website to check out the Gastroenterologist's they have...these local city Dr's in the smaller Hospitals are slackers compared to how thorough they are in the big Hospitals in Boston, don't get me wrong you win some you loose some when it comes to these types of things but I have had more then one stay at the two Hospitals I have to choose from and, I'd rather take the 30 minute ride to the next one that is wayyyyy better then stay in one of them again!! This stuff should be done all at once, while I'm sick and at the hospital not going day to day one thing a day sitting in uncomfortable chairs getting sick in a shopping bag until they figure it out.

Would you happen to know what the drink tastes like? OMG I hope I dont get sick on these people...I promise I wont laugh:laugh1blue: JK if you can tell I am feeling a little better tonight...I even ate a very little dinner and so far it's all good:19: Oh please be over...{Crosses fingers} I hope something shows up in this next test or I will freak.

An upper GI series is not particularly pleasant. The drink is absolutely horrible. Your best bet is to guzzle it all immediately. DO NOT SIP AT IT. Sorry I couldn't give you better news, but it is honest news at any rate.

Edit: BTW, strep can definitely cause you to have your symptomatology. There are different degrees of strep. I would question your doctor why you continue to have relapses though. Also, removal of the tonsils is far less common nowadays. You, in part, actually WANT you tonsils to be there, as they will tend to "attract" the infection rather than it settling elsewhere. Group A Streptococcus (the bacteria that causes strep) can also cause skin infections and some blood infections as well. Also, as I am here thinking about it, ask your doc why they didn't do a rapid strep test first and a true culture second? If you had that bad of an infection, it would have shown up on the rapid first. Also, did they do a CBC on you? That is, did they draw blood at all?

I hear the Upper GI test (Barium drink), tastes like chalk by itself, but there are a lot of places that flavor it? I dunno though, hope everything goes well for you!!

It will taste like chalk if you are lucky. You don't want the flavoring, trust me, it is bad, maybe even worse than the barium sulfate alone. As an SLP I performed many, many MBSS (Modified Barium Swallow Studies) at the hospital during my internship years ago, so I am speaking from experience.

The series itself will take about 1-2 hours, double that if they are looking at the small intestine.

Be sure to push a LOT of fluids after the test. The barium will tend to harden in the digestive tract and can back cause constipation significantly. Drink as much water/juice as you can possibly drink after the test and for about a day following such.

First I want to Thank you for your honesty I was always told only a true friend will tell you the truth whether you will like it or not. I don't like it but I appreciate being told it.

Then to move onto the "Strep" issue...I never heard of someone getting severe stomach pain and vomiting from strep before. I have heard of rashes and skin irritations fever ear aches and such all can come with strep but never all of what I have been going through. Well that was until now. They did do a rapid strep and it came back negative that was yesterday, today they called at like 4pm telling me it changed..the weird thing too is my throat didn't hurt until they told me now I can feel it burning...figures the pain meds must have worn off...lol Oh and for the CBC? yes they drew 5 vials of blood from me yesterday before they did the throat culcher.
I have to ask how do you know so much medical info? Did you go to school for it, Or a Dr or Nurse in the family??

Well I went for the tests this morning all went well...I held the drink down and they were able to do what they needed to do. I was told they can't tell me anything my Dr has to be the one to tell me. So now is the fun part waiting,....and....waiting,....and well you get the picture it sux not knowing.

I do feel much better today...I want to go run 5 blocks, then eat a big fat juicy STEAK w/ some rice or something...MmMmMmM...lol I am HUNGRY lol but I will put money I will take two bites and be full...I lost 7lbs from not being able to eat the last time I checked was two days ago so it could be more. I just can't wait for dinner :)

The fact you are thinking about food is a good thing.

Sounds like you had something viral going on. Hang in there GF.

na they were talking intestinal today. They are sure they found something just not sure if that is the problem and have to wait for my Dr to tell me and decide what the next step is. I have had these same symptoms over and over so many times it can't be something viral and they didn't pick up on it after all the testing they have been doing. I believe that was the first things they ruled out. I am going to take it easy still until I'm 100%. I just ate my first meal...I made some poached eggs and man were they good...lol I am going to go lay down for a little bit now...it's been a long morning and I am pooped. TTYL

I have extensive training in the med field, been out for almost 12 years now and my wife is a nurse.

I am a Speech-Language Pathologist with specialty in Apraxia and Dysphagia. You wouldn't think I'd pick up on that much, but if you are going to work with people and rehabilitate their swallowing function, you've got to know most of what is going on with them medically.

Oh so very true. I have two boys that well, one was in speech for 5yrs he is done now and the other has been in for 3 so far and still needs work but it's great to be able to understand him without having him getting frustrated because no one can. Or having to try and figure out what the word that he made up means. Bless people like you!! I think it is great that you absorbed everything you could while in school. Good For you, it will help you and the people you know in the long run.
