depends, if the snail is shaped like a rams horn it should be fine but they can breeding with only one snail and if the snail is a cone shape it may contain poison could you get pics?

is it usual for such things to come out of frozen food?

well not really because the food is frozen for days so the snail wouldnt be able to survive and an egg would just die aswell, have u added any new plants? because i added a fern to my aquarium and it took me months before i got rid of all the snails

Maybe it came out for the frozen food because when i added my plants i suddenly found the snails at about 5 mm in diameter comeing around only after i put bloodworms in

credit to fishpondinfo.com - that is the red ramshorn snail
http://www.elmersaquarium.com/image_fish/01%20snail_mystery_gold.jpg
credit to elmersaqaurium.com that is a gold mystery snail which does come in several colours
but those are the only two snails i would consider safe to put in an aquarium most others may and can let of poisons

Snails are not harmful in themself. The problem is usually if they die (water stress) and the fact that they are very good on finding and eating every egg your fish lay.
They usually arrive with plants as Rollie says and there can have been eggs on one of your plants you got 3 weeks ago and thats the reason why you only start seing snails now.
