Lady Hobbs you asked me in another thread to post some pics of my blood parrot. Are you thinking of getting one? Very cool fish IMO. As you can see from the photos my BP isn't as deformed in the mouth area as most of them are. She can bite quite well!! I also added a pic of my new rhino pleco. The pleco that was in this tank died recently, it never seemed as healthy as the one in the oscar tank. Don't know if my BP had anything to do with it's death or not. This rhino is like a bulldog! Very thick, nice looking too.
Oh, and BTW sorry for the pics being so icky, I think my camera is starting to die!!

Lovely fish. I used to have two but they didn't live long :-| we don't use that LFS anymore, but my lovely new LFS won't sell parrot fish as they are mutants, so i guess we can't buy any more. :-(

Thank you for posting those. I want one, yes. I want to put one with my severums I also plan to get in the larger tank I also plan to get. :) Some say they are pretty aggressive and others just a pussy cat so as always, cichlids can go either way.
If it holds true to my luck (like all the aggression with these bloody angelfish) I will probably end up with the meanest, junk-yard-dog BP ever born. LOL
If they want to stop selling mutant fish, they need to look farther than the blood parrot. There are several fish types that have been cross bred. I think the BP is targeted simply because of the deformed mouth they have. It's not like they've been held down and been artifically inseminated to produce a mutant.
I actually read on one of the sites that their mouths have been cut off to give them "that" look. Honestly. So much bad information is out there.
I do not agree that fish should be dyed and the jellybeans should definately be banned along with the tetra's and all the other dyed fish. But as long as something comes naturally, I have no problem with it.

Not sure but isn't the Flowerhorn also a cross breed?
Nice fish!
They're not mutants...they're hybrids...same as a mule...

Thanks for all the kind comments!!
Yep they're hybrids* - flowerhorns are too. If you ever go to the LFS and see a tank with a label of "mixed cichlids" or "mixed rainbows" you can be sure they're hybrids too.
Yeah, if you're like me Hobbs we tend to pick rather aggressive fish...my own BP is very aggressive so I am limited on what can live in the same tank as her...(but she's so gorgeous that she's worth it!!)
*There was an article a long time back about blood parrots. In it one man, who was a curator at a major public aquarium (either Michigan or Wisconsin) stated that he thought they weren't hybrids at all but rather the eggs or fry had been exposed to selenium. Fish/eggs exposed to this will exhibit the same deformities and will often be sterile too (especially males).

MY BP is so gentle to the other fish. whenever i got up to the tank he swims to the top and does the "feed me feed me" dance as i call it lol. I have never seen him being aggressive to any fish, except when he chased the one little glowlight, but i think he realised the glowlight is too quick b/c he stopped chasing it.
