I was wondering what would happen if I put a filter that was quite oversized for a tank in an aquarium(say a filter meant for 75 gallon tanks in a 20 gallon tank), would there be any negative effects on the environment of the aquarium of the fish?
Just wondering.

Only positive affects..

Only negative effect would be to much flow, can't have to much filtration. 75g, are you looking into a penguin 350 or something? I would put one on a 30g in a heartbeat. A 20g might be to much flow, I don't know of a way to turn it down but if there is, go for it.

Ha no I was just wondering I was planning on purchasing the next step down (the penguin 200?) but I just wanted to know.

I think it would be fine. I would at least get one for a 40g, probably one for a 50g or so.

Like Kuli said, only problem is too much flow but usually you can find a way to turn that down.
I have a Rena Filstar xP2 canister filter on my 29g aquarium and it is rated for 75. The thing works miracles in my aquarium.

I didn't want to start a whole new thread for this so...

I have a 46 gal with a whisper 60 filter on it. I'm thinking of running two filters, one on each end of the tank.

I want to do this b/c I've noticed some dead spots in my tank already. I want to keep a good flow throughout the entire tank. I'm also planning on overstocking the tank and I don't want to be under filtered and don't want to use air stones to keep the water oxygenated enough for all the fish.

Can I just buy a second whisper 60 or should I get 2 whisper 40's? (I'd like to be symmetrical)

I wouldnt get whisper.. They arent good. If you wanted to get 2 filters, the penguin 350 or the aquaclear110 is best.

That is a matter of personal preference. Whisper ease of use, and quietness, are pretty good. Plus, something that AC's can not do, is on a whisper, you can turn down the flow to almost nothing if you so choose to. Like during feeding time so all your food doesn't get sucked up in the filter. AC's can not do that.

Changing filter media in an AC can be difficult too, where as on a whisper, just pull out the insert and throw it away, and replace with a new one. Pretty easy.

Just a matter of preference. I do like how the AC "forces" the water thru the filter media though. Major plus there.

Yeah, but I didn't want to start a new thread so I resurected this one.

I do like how quiet the whisper that I have is. I have a friend who complains about how loud his filter is. And I like being able to turn the flow down all the way when I feed. I think for now I'll stick with whisper just for those reasons.

It almost doesn't matter what I do b/c if I have two 60's and they flow TOO much, I can just turn them down a little.

What would you do?

Agreed, its personal preference. But, the very reasons why you like Whisper is the same reason I dislike them :ezpi_wink1:

The way Whisper filters (and others such as AquaTec) are set up, you are very limited in customizing them without any big modifications. Which is what makes AC the superior HOB filter. Need to add peat? No problem, sack it and throw it in. Need some extra ammonia remover? No problem, sack it and thrown it in. Plus you get optimum flow through all media.

But I do agree, it's all a matter of personal preference.

As do I. My 29g has an AC110.

I think from what I've read and just for a trial run, I'm going to get another whisper 60 and see how it works out. I did look at the penguin and ac. The penguin seems pretty nice. So if all else fails, I'll try penguin next.

Also, the more stuff I buy and experiement with, just lets me slowly build up supplies for a second tank!!! (the wife won't even see it coming, LOL)

I try to put 2 big filters rated double for each tank. You can't over filter IMO and if ones goes down you have a back up. It is also easier for maintanance, you can stagger it so it never effects your cycle or bioload.

I just put an AC 50 on my 25g to replace the old AC 30...

I was debating whether to go with the AC 70...and I'm glad I didn't...

There would have been too much flow for the fish and plants I have in the tank, since I can't adjust the flow on the AC that much...

I like the whisper b/c I can turn the flow from full, down to virtually nothing...

I don't believe in too much flow. My first tank (20g) came with a emperor 400. The stocking for that tank love it (yellow lab and 3spot guoramis).

There is such a thing! That's why certain fish, inverts, etc., have adapted to different environments, such as still water, slow moving water, rapids...etc.

So I'll agree that you probably can't have too much filtration, but you can certainly have too much flow...

Agreed. I could see where too much flow would cause problems.
