I just got done setting up a 25 gal. tank. It is a taller tank than my 20 gal. When hooking up my power filter I had to "make" a new tube because the filter that I just bought at a garage sale ($5) only had one short section of tube with it and that would only have reached about 6 inches down into my tank. I found some suitable ridgid tubing out in my garage and while cutting a piece I started to wonder just how long to make it. Wouldn't it be best to draw water from nearer the bottom of the tank? I cut a piece long enough so that the end of my tube is now only about 3/4 inch from the gravel. Is this ok? I can always go back and make it shorter but wouldnt it be better to have it draw from the bottom since it returns in the top? Wouldnt this turn the water over better?

Generally, it should be about 3 or so inches from the bottom.

I have always heard no closer than an inch but 3" is even better, mine is 4".

Agreed at 3-4 inches.
