About a year back now I went to the pet store and bought two plecos that the pet store told me were both rubber nose plecos and that they would only grow to about 4-5 inches. A couple months, some newly formed bristles and some research later I find out that I have 1 albino bristle nose pleco and I think 1 rubber nose pleco. A couple more months later and some more research I find out the hard way the albino is a daddy- a few weeks later a repeat daddy! So, my question- Is the other one a rubber nose? I've read articles and they just all seem to have copied and pasted each other or hand no idea what they are talking about.

You can see the post about it and the photos from my blog here:

Thank you!

I am fairly certain they do not cross-breed. But I do know that BN plecos are differentiated by how bushy their noses are for one. So I'd guess your less-whiskered is the momma.

The one you thought was a rubber nose has a bit pointier nose that what I normally see. Here's a couple pictures of my rubbernose for comparison:

These are the babies. They are about 75 % albino and the rest are the brownish colored ones.

Since it bred with your BN pleco... I'd say its a BN pleco.

Can it be a bn without any bristles? It is completely smooth other than the 2 barbs on the sides of her mouth. I read that sometimes they are smaller bristles or show up later.

Do a google search of female BN pleco images... you will see many of the females do not always have bristles... some grow nubs and some grow small bristles.

Trillianne is right on. Female BNs have little to know bristles, and a BN can't breed with a rubbernose. Congratulations on the fry! Fun times.
