Its a pretty subjective question there. I would say digital just because its dificult to get a shot thats focusing on the actual subject and there are so many ways to screw up when taking pics of your fish. Of course the high end digital SLRs will take the best pictures when paired with a macro lense (Cannon DigiRebel and Nikon D series jump to mind), but I doubt you want to spend that much money. The Nikon CoolPix line is supposed to be very good for point and shoot digital cameras, and I am very happy with the Casio that I have been using. If you are on a tight budget or are not technologically inclined, you should be able to find a 5 megapixel Kodak that will do what you want and be easy to use for less than $100 (there are numerous options for the sub $100 5MP cameras, but I am not familiar with them so do your own research...I just recall Kodak being very user friendly).

How much money can you (do you) want to spend? I'd suggest a good DSLR such as a Nikon D50 or D80, Canon Digital Rebel series or Olympus Evolt E410, E500 or E510. Pair it up with a good lens and tripod and you're set to go. If those are to expensive, try to find a good compact digital camera that has good macro (for up close) capabilities and has full manual settings (exposure, time, flash, appeture, etc.) Also, try to get some background info on basic photograpy techniques. Lastly, practice, practice, practice.

Hope you don't mind but I moved your post into off topics.

A lot of the folks I know just use the Point and Shoot camera's. Not too technical and seem to take good shots.

I use an Olympus D-535 and get pretty good pics. I have attached some of the pics I have taken of my fish with this camera. (the pic of the molly isnt the greatest, but its not too bad. i do have a pic of a zebra danio that turned out great.) just takes some practice.
