what type of filter do you recomend for a 55 gallon.. and is a bio-wheel filter better then the others?

I run a 350 penguin. I like the bio-wheels. I also run a penplax 250 on my tank though. A 350 alone is not enough.

My 55 has the emporer 400 and the penguin 350. I should have a canister, however, and it's already in the plans but a 55 gallon should have two filters.
I don't have a love affair going with the bio-wheels. My next hang on filters will be AquaClear 110. The sponge in that will do every bit as much as a bio-wheel.

I am going to put an XP4 on mine as soon as I get the money.:c5:
I personally don't like the biowheels. Mine used to stop turning all the time. I ended up getting frustrated with it and turned to Aquaclear HOBs.
I think a 55 gallon should either have 2 large HOBs or one single large canister. Intake at one end and output at another. This should ensure good water flow. In one of my 55s though I have a canister and one small HOB. (large ornament in the middle of the tank was interfering with flow.)
Anyway, I recommend Eheim canisters and Aquaclear HOBs. However those are not your only options. I will strongly recommend against cheapo brands of filters though. They will only cause trouble.

I use an Aqua Clear 110 on one side and a whisper 60 on the other in mine.

Biowheels are excellant at eliminating ammonia and nitrite. However, as a result, massive amounts of nitrate are produced, stressing fish, which is why they have fell out of favor in some quarters.

I love canisters :) They're super quiet and look nice n tidy. I have a Fluval 305 for my 40g, a Jebo 809 and Eheim 2215 (I think) for my 100g and still a whisper 10 hob for my 10...which I want to change out for a small canister someday. :) So far all filters have been fine though for me...
