I have a Jack Dempsey and I was thinking about breeding either platies or mollies to feed him. Is this a good idea or are there any better choices of fish to breed for him? Any help would be appreciated.

Platties will do better than mollies for most people. They aren't a picky about water quality and crowding.

Better yet would be something like a pair Convicts.

Simpler, and healthier, get it onto a quality commercial pellet.

shrimps are easier if you can have them. or guppies instead of platies so you don't overcrowd a tank too much. but then, most livebearers eat their fry.

you can try minnows too, the thing is, the adult don't eat the fry but the other fry eat the other siblings!

Although they will eat them in the confines of an aquarium, JD's really aren't piscivores. A better & safer choice would be earthworms, mealworms, & nightcrawlers. I feed them to my Jaguar cichlids (which are true piscivores), & they love them.

Ah I assume this is related to the convict thread you started. If you are trying to breed for food, con's are the way to go.

not really, I think I have decided to not try my luck with convicts though. I don't need that many fish to either feed or rehome. But thanks for all the help.
