I want to buy a canister filter for my 10g which currently has a Whisper 10 HOB...is it inevitable that the tank is going to experience a cycle, or can that be prevented somehow?

In my opinion, not really, provided you immerse the Biowheel in the water after you add the canister, or the filter media if you don't have a Biowheel. But I'm not too experienced in that area, so don't take it as the end-all advice.

A canister for a 10g, must be a very small canister. I would leave both filters running for 3 weeks and you won't experiance any cycle. Or, if you have any type of media in the HOB you can put it into the canister to jump start it. Either way will work.

DUH, I never thought of that! lol thanks Spyder :)
Any reason you want to go with a canister for that small of a tank? I mean, outstanding filtration, but you could get away with a cheaper option by adding a larger HOB like the Aquaclear 30. I run those on my 10 gallon tanks and can't imagine needing any more filtration.

Mostly, I don't like having the tank so far from the wall...that and of course the better filtration:) The canisters for 10's aren't that expensive, esp if I find one used some where.
