for my new 50g long, im looking for a larger cichlid. a oscar was the first idea that came to mind and a JD the second. would a oscar be stressed being in a long tank?

Not big enough for an oscar.

A severum is a larger cichlid and it would be fine. Also there is firemouths and such.

yep, already got a tuquoise severum. i thought the oscar would be cramped so i figure either a JD or use the tank as a oscar growout. i can get a baby oscar for 10 bucks and get it a regular 55g when its more grown, but it doesnt really matter if i get a JD or baby oscar. would a pair of JD fit in the 50g long or just 1?

What are the dimensions of the 50? Most likely you can grab a group of about 6 juvenile JDs and let them pair off, then keep the tank just for the pair.

The minimum for an oscar is 75 since they can hit 15-18".

Don't do it...I wanted an Oscar...did the research...and looking at my standard 55g...I'd never put an Oscar in it...much too small...no room to turn barely...

i'll go with you and fishguy, no oscar. i can actually get a pair of JD's without the mixing process. a store here sells pairs of oscars for 50$ and pairs of JD's for 30. thanks for the help! looks like JD's
