Is it ok to have both in one tank? I was thinking about 6 corys, with my pleco, going into the 55 gallon....
do you think they will compete for food?

They will be fine, I have a common with 3 albinos and a clown with 3 peppered.

good. also, I was reading on another thread about using sand for corys, but was wondering... how do you go about cleaning it?

Basically you hold the vaccuum close enough to suck up the debris but not the sand.
You also need to comb it out every so often to keep any gas pockets from building up.

I clean mine different than most. I turn mine over constantly by sticking it in the sand and quickly pulling it out and it rotates it well and cleans it. Takes a tad longer so I do half one water change and half the next on my 55g. If I am just there to clean up the poo, I will stay about an inch or a little less above it.

I have sand in my oscar/pleco tank & also in my mixed tropicals fort he past 3 years and it's a lot easier to clean than anything else. I just suck all the waste from the top and every now and then mix it to get the air bubbles out. Sometimes it gets into the bucket and I put water in then drain the waste off the top - it' looks a lot nicer too.
