ive read from a couple sources that differnt species of livebearing fish can breed for example a female platy can mix with with a male guppy this sounds untrue and weird but ive heard it more than once

Not female platy + male guppy, but here are some that can happen. Best not to mix these kinds of fish.

Swordtail+platy
Swordtail+molly
Molly+platy
Guppy+Endler's livebearer

Different kinds of these fish can mix-the results are most often not very pretty.
Chiclids
Angelfish (freshwater)
Danios
Tetras
Minnows
Cories
And most other fish there are several varieties of.
