Someone just stopped by and gave me a Goldfish in a 1 Gallon bowl with black water.
The only empty tank I have is a 5g. If I put it in the 5g will it live or die?

Needs at least a 30g tank. It will be fine for a few days but it needs a 30g, if you can't supply it, then take it to your LFS and give it to them or get store credit.

It's one of those Feeder Goldfish. $.30 each or 10 for $1.00 type. Not Fancy Goldfish.

I'm not saying to do it but I know a kid that has had 2 fancy goldfish in a 3 gallon fish bowl for 10 years.

The 5 gal will do for now, and as soon as you can buy it a bigger one. OR if you know anyone with a pond, they can survive very well, even through the winter in a pond.

Well, yes, it probably CAN be done. I could probably raise my daughter in a closet, too, but not at all a good idea.

The 5 gallon is too small - but it has to be better than the 1 gallon for today - put him in the 5 gallon with some slime from / or a 2nd filter from one of your other tanks.
Afterwards you can get a used tank and set it up for goldfish or find a new home for him.

It's about 4". My first tank ever was 10 Common Goldfish in a 10g. They lived like 2 years. Just enought time to see my Gold common Golfish do a color change.

Goldfish get BIG! 30g at least or find him a new home. I would probably take him to the LFS and get a fancy one if I was to get a goldfish.

that would be mean to put it in something that small i have feeder goldfish and some of them are 11 in long and it didnt take them very long to get that big .
20g for 1 goldfish...10g for every additional goldfish...
Comets (feeders) grow much larger than fancies and need more room to swim.
Having said that...keeping the fish in a 5g for the short-term is absolutely fine...just do plenty of large water changes...
I just remembered that in AFM they talked about the China Doll Goldfish that only gets about 2 inches long and is suitable for a 5 gallon.

You know I usually never shop at Petsmart, but I stepped in today and guess what I saw.
Advertised Black Skirted Tetras and Otos Cats sign read" Cold water and can live in a fish bowl" wonder why I never see a sign that says Bettas can live in a bowl. Maybe they assume since they are in cups people would think they can live in bowls.
