So my veiltail got an new filter, and it seems that over night he tore his tail, shredded the top part of his caudal fin on the part that sucks up the water into the filter.
I put stress-coat in his tank to help him out-if it will- and wondered if just consistent clean water and keeping it from happening again will clear up the problem.
I want to help him heal up, and wondered how folks prevented this? I felt it over, and did not feel any sharp, catchy nubs on it, and I assume it is from the new filter part. Thanks all.

Clean water and just watch him. Are there any other decorations that he could have gotten snagged on?

Try putting sponge over the filter intake to avoid this happening again.

One of my veiltails shredded his tailfin so badly that half of it was hanging in ribbons, just from his mad dashes around and through the plants in his tank. The fin grew back on its own, with no problems whatsoever. Granted, it grew back a different color, but it grew back healthy.

depends on the damage, i got a DT that lost all of his top tail that never grew back.
happen to my yellow HM as well, just happen so hopefully his tail will grow back or he will be one ugly HM...

You might also want to make sure he isn't doing it to himself if he still ends up with torn fins after you add the sponge. I went through three different tank set-ups until I caught my betta in the act of tearing his fins. Why he does this I have no idea...it's rather distressing to see a fish chasing it's tail like a dog, but worse still unlike a dog he can catch it and then shred it. *sigh* On the upside I'm not attached to his looks, he's just a pet store betta that I lurve. :11:

Yes, I have another post going- he is shredding his fins- so I am now trying to help him out with it! Thanks all.
