I have been on this site for a day and had lots of great advice, so glad that I found this forum!

My next question: For a saltwater rookie, do I need to purchase a UV sterilizer? I have a 12G Eclipse system, fish only, but in the process of cycling now with live rock and sand. No fish yet.

I am also using RO water, do I need to add anything to it?

I dont know of any UV sterylizers that can be used without being in conjuction with a canister filter.

BTW, you posted this is the "introduce yourself" thread. Try to post in the right thread. Ill go ahead and move this one to technical for you.

RO water needs to be mixed with a salt mix, such as Instant Ocean. Use a hydrometer to get to the proper salinity. I do recall in tank UV sterilizers, but they are rather bulky and way overpowered for such a small tank. Better to concentrate on filtration, lighting, etc.

You should not need a UV sterilizer, but if you do find a good one for such a tank, it could help.
