I'm 18 years old and have an avid interest in keeping fish. I'm going to college in West Virginia for biology and possibly switching to pre-vet. I have worked at a pet store in Pittsburgh for two years. I have three fish tanks and several betta "containers" that are larger than a jar but not quite a tank. My largest tank is 60 gallons. I bred bettas for my senior project. Thats about it...I'm happy to be here:19:

Welcome Jilly :) What are you going to feed the fry? I used cultured infusoria and green water when I went through the Anabatid phase in college.

Unfortunately, I only had 2 fry survive. I tried with everything I had to breed brine shrimp, but I couldn't get the conditions just right. I fed them some vinegar eels, but I was afraid to feed them too much for fear of polluting the water with the vinegar mixture. I also tried to breed a culture of microworms but couldn't keep up with how often they needed to be changed, and mom didn't like the smell of the rotten milk in her living room :). I tried (stupidly) to feed them that liquid fry food. About 10 survived on that. Once they were bigger, I crushed up some high-quality betta pellets. They seemed to enjoy those. I hope to try to breed them again when I have more time...its been busy with college coming and all.

Keep trying, Jilly. Takes a while to get the hang of feeding those wee babies. Best method I know to culture infusoria is dried duckweed in a jar that gets three or four hours of sunlight a day. You'll know its ripe when you can see little moving bits of dust with a magnifying glass. When it gets really misty, take some out in a eye dropper and squirt 'em at the fry. Key is to do that 8 or 10 times a day, and change 20 percent of the water daily. You should get around an 80 percent yield that way.

Dave

By the way, BBS is too big for Betta fry to eat for the first couple weeks.
