View Full Version : I think my SAEs were breeding last evening (with video)

So last evening briefly before lights out, we noticed our Siamese Algae Eater pair behaving in a rather unusual way.... Their dark stripe was nearly completely faded and they were circling and shimmying together.

This morning they were back to their usual colorful, normal playful selves. My research seemed inclined to indicate they were either breeding or being territorial with each other. (Though no one has reported actual successes in them breeding, nor do I expect so with how voraciously the danios will eat the bloodfins eggs around here)

Here's a short video that I took from last night. Its a bit fuzzy but I think you will get the gist of what they were doing. (And yes, that's me with the remainder of a cold voice telling the Angelfish to go away at the end)

Well since they were at it yet again last night.... I did get a much better video. You should also be able to see just how much of their black stripe is faded away in this one too.

Too bad you couldn't capture them and put them in a breeder. Eggs will probably never make it with the other fish in the tank. They do appear to be breeding. Good videos.

In my searching on this... no one has reported success with captive breeding. So while theoretically I could try to catch them and put them in my QT (currently empty) to see if they would lay eggs, I am highly skeptical anything would come of it.

I'm just happy that they are happy. :shappy:

Not that I have noticed.

The only fish I've seen lay eggs thus far are my bloodfins.... and they were being eaten up by the danios about as fast as they got laid.
