anyone know what to feed puffer fish besides frozen foods?
They need live snails to eat. Snails keep their teeth short.
Rue, our wonderful resident puffer afficianado.
Puffers continue with tooth growth throughout their life and so need something to keep their teeth in check.

When I had mine, I would go get feeder guppies and request them to place some of the small snails they didn't like in there. I would place a dozen feeder guppies in there and feed the puffer frozen food every other day and very little, mainly to keep the guppies alive.

I highly recommend it. Most LFS will give you all you want.
Not sure there is much of an option with puffers. They, as far as I understand, truly need them. If I am wrong, I will appreciate the correction though.

Puffers need crunchy foods, snails are about all a dp can handle! My slightly bigger irrubesco's will tackle small pieces of shell on shrimp like nobody's business though. Larger puffers can also eat up shrimp, mussels, clams, crab legs, etc.
Alot of puffer owners simply throw together a 10 gal tank to breed snails, it is easy to do and you have a constant source of snails to grab and go for your puffs.

I am thinking of buying some puffer fish. And when i do i might start a snail farm for them to breed. Is there any special snail i should buy for the puffers or do they eat all snails?

Also, when doing a snail tank for food.....how do you do it?
All you need is a basic heater and filter. Water changes as you would perform normally.

My snail tank is simply a 10 gal with a filter and heater. The tank is near natural light for the algae. Some people just use plastic buckets or what have you. Snails cooperate with breeding quite well as long as they are fed:c5: . I use a sponge filter as the tank also doubles as a fry tank when needed. Follow regular maintenance and you will have a constant source of snails.
