Neon Tetra Mystery.

I am new to keeping neon tetras, and i have about 40-50 neon tetras in my 100 gallon tank. My question is, why do they are separate when you close the lights and when you turn them on they school?

Can't really answer that. Mine are pretty much the opposite. They do their own thing when the lights are on....not together much unless feeding. then when the lights go off they all go back behind the tree and plants and sit there...sleep, whatever it is they do at night. Mine are down to 4 now, so I dont think they can school much with just a few.....I guess, I dunno.

Mine made me laugh, i even took a video of it. I have this really tall driftwood in the middle of the tank, and they are going around it like a merry go round. I think they have a routine. They swim around the tank, do a circle and then continue.
