View Full Version : Gold ram weird or normal?

I purchased a gold ram the other day. It was the last one left and was only an inch at the most. I asked them if they could get larger ones and they said no so I got it and put it in my hospital tank until it gets large enough not to be consummed by my other fish. It is really lazy acting, not acting like it is sick because it swims around and eats but if you stick the vacuum in, it just sits there and you have to literally vacuum around it. I sleeps on the bottom. Like I said though, it slowly swims around the aquarium. My numbers are: pH-7.2, Ammonia-0 Nitrite-0 Nitrate-5. The temp. is set at 79. He has normal colors I think.

Ok, just making sure it wasn't sick or something, I was placing aquarium salt and extra stress coat and also doing more frequent water changes. I may have to just get rid or it or my bichir, with it being that lazy it would eat it. Guess I will have to say bye bye to my bichir.:c3:

It probably needs some dithers. I'm sure he will spunk up once in his perminant home. Another way to get action is to get him a mate. I breed GBR's and they all sleep on the gravel so don't be alarmed by that. I also find them very friendly, they are not scared of me when working in the tank. Good luck with him, great purchase.

dithers? Also I am thinking of dropping one of my 10g nano reefs and buying a 20g planted and maybe buying 2 of them and some cory's.

Dither fish are fish that will make your Ram feal it's safe, like some Tetras, Danios or some type of fish that will always be out and about. If the dithers are calm that Ram will feel safe and be out, more active.

my ram always stays near the bottom unless hes feeding. he likes to inspect the little niches of the aquarium, he especially loves the rock cave and the plant clusters. he will swim then just stay put. i think thats how they are, but they have beautiful coloring.

He's dead, what happened? He hadn't lost any color so it hadn't been long. He was just dead, I guess it is just because the LFS I got him at 3 days ago draws heavily through a straw. Man there is 10$ down the drain. I looked him over and found no signs of anything.

I guess. They had him in a tank full of 2" firemouths and Columbian sharks as well so that couldn't of helped him.

You're LFS has no guarantee? One time I went to an LFS I trusted that had no guarantee , got a pair of mollys to breed, the male was dead when I got home and the female shortly after.

It will take them a while to feel at home. + They arn't really active fish. If you see something wrong with him then start treating, but if its only that he's swimming in one place, then i dont think you should be worried.

I dont think I would buy from that LFS if I were you. Doesnt sound like they are very trustworthy. They dont have a good gaurantee and they sell their fish for way to high. I have four german blue rams and each of them cost $6.99. Its still a little high but I trust the fish store and they always have good stock. My rams have been in my tank for a little over a week and I already have two pairs and they have both spawned.

I trust them, I have bought fish from them for years but this fish just came in the day before. I think it was shock. No were around here has over a 2 day guarantee besides petco and I ain't buying there fish! I have to buy from them!
