NLS, hands down. It is great with orange and red. It is better than any other food I have ever tried, for color-enhancing as well. The only Hikari food I would feed big cichlids is Hikari Cichlid Bio-Gold+, but NLS is even better.

Well while we're on the subject of Red Devils
Anyone got some good tank mates for them?

Possible a Jack or large severum. An oscar to, just make sure it is smaller, not all but one or the other.

your tank size would really help us to help pick tankmates.

It also depends on the red devil, some or more tolerant of tankmates. But in general possibilities are: oscars, jack dempseys, flowerhorn, bichirs, Synodontis spp., and many others.

Then try something now. Rearrange the tank when you get one (or preferably two) more fish. And take out his favorite hide/cave and add a few more hides if you can.

Ditto on that. That is the only way to add aggressive fish to an aggressive tank.

Other than the better foods mentioned, it takes time for most larger cichlids to develop full color. At 3 inches he's still a baby. With maturity your red devil will get more and more colorful. Some turn firey red, some yellowish, just depending on the population your fish came from.

Your fish is young yet....his/her aggression levels will grow as the fish grows. What may work now very well may not work in the near future. Best thing is to be prepared in case you have to remove fish.

As far as food goes, I don't have a red devil but I do have a blood parrot and her main diet is Hikari Cichlid Gold and Hikari Cichlid Staple. She also eats Marine Supreme flakes, live crickets, live earthworms, hunks of raw shrimp and some of the fresh veggies I give the pleco. Things like cucumber, zucchini and squash. Oh, and she also steals all the large algae wafers from the pleco too. Stores them in "her" area and eats them at her lesiure.
Here is a (bad) pic of her right before spawning but you can see her color and how intense it is...

proper, varied diet, water quality, lighting, and stress all play key roles in coloration of not just red devils, but all species of aquatic life. i have found that a solid black background will also make colors "pop out" more
