Hadn't checked on my filter in maybe two months, and because had been doing extra stuff for work on my days off, yesterday was the first water change in 3-4 weeks :*( The setup is a 40 gal with 3 common goldfish (they will be going to a pond once I can find a solar pump, but think I might have one all ready in mind), which has been cycled for almost a year. For the past few weeks, I've only fed them every 3-4 days because I knew the water changes weren't going to be done like I usually do (40-50% weekly).
So I was doing my change and peeked in the HOB filter and saw a bunch of green mush that looks like a diluted green algae, but can't be since I don't even use a tank light (only room light) and all the windows of the room are always covered (I sleep days for work). Anyone have any suspicions on this mysterious substance? To try to minimize it, I scraped as much as I could off the inside of the filter, and removed the cartridge and extra bag of AC biomax stuff that I use. Got new replacements for those, but left the biowheel alone since it didn't visibly have any of that junk on it.
