Why did they die from ick? It's so treatable. A box of Jungle Labs from Walmart are $2.39. Ick repoduces in the gravel so you may still have to treat the tank.

Also, with Ich you can up the temperature a couple of degrees while medicating and that helps speed up the process a little.

I'd add another 3-5 Glowlites so that you have a nice school.
And something hardy to clean the bottom of the tank - a couple of Bronze Cory's, maybe?

My best advise is to go with what YOU like, it is your happiness with the tank that truly matters.

if you are going to go planted, keep in mind that plants require different amounts of care depending on the species and you should pick plants that will fit your existing set up.

Are you wanting to add otos because of an algae problem or because you like them?

If you like them, the I say go for it, but if it is simply because of algae then I would post more about your tank and we can try and fix the algae problem without you having to buy a fish you don't truly like. That and ottos should never be expected to keep a tank clean as algae can grow faster than they can eat.

I would treat the tank for about 3-5 days for ich. I would then invest in a specimen container. I love mine, I just pour the fish and a little water in it. At 5 minute intervals, I add a little of my own tank water and keep the specimen container in my water to keep it the same temperature. This helps them adjust to the pH and ammonia and Nitrites and w/e else is in there. I do it for about 30 minutes and then I net the fish and let it swim from the net, I don't force it out. I have heard if more than half of the water the fish is in is yours, you can just let him swim out of the container and put the water back in the tank. I would defiantly treat for ich though.
