Okay so I lucked out and got a 45 gallon tank with a stand and everything for 100 dollars, I currently have a 30 gallon with 3 African Cichlids which seem happy and are not getting any bigger all are around 4-5", I have a10 gallon with a baby Convict Cichlid in it and 2 Female Guppies and I was wondering if I transferred the Convict to the 45 gallon and wanted to add more convicts what would be a reasonable number. I hope you guys can help me, I need the experts and if you feel like Im doing something wrong currently please let me know, Im very new to this, Ive done lots of research but still dont know a lot. I would like to know how many full grown convicts could survive in a 45 gallon tank.

You can start out with 5-6, then swap off the extras after a pair forms. You aren't likely to have enough space for more than one pair when they start breeding, but will have some space to grow out the fry.
There are plenty of other species that are less aggressive than convicts, any particular reason you want more of them?

Get a male and female convict and the tank will be overstocked in no time! :hmm3grin2orange:

One male & one female, as they are aggressive towards one another( gender specific; they are very easy to sex). Once they pair up, they usually make a good pair & are outstanding parents. And they are PROLIFIC breeders, so be prepared to use the fry as fish food, or give them to your local aquarium store.( I have had a few pairs over the years, & have had them lay eggs while they still had free swimmimng fry in the tank) They also have plenty of chutzpah, as they will stand up to fish MUCH larger than themselves. Also, eventually, I'm pretty sure they will kill/eat those guppies.:22:

I ended up getting 2 females and added them with my male, the guppy that was in the tank had babies and then soon after they all were eaten so was the adult guppy, right now the male stays in the cave and I have seen some fins missing from the females but so far no pairing off yet. When they pair off I will probably remove the other Female.
Thanks for all the help

My husband's about "convicts" .. "How big are they and what are they in for?"
Being that he heard title of thread only- and not knowing what they are lol

Most often assault and battery, occasionally murder if there isn't room to escape or somewhere for the victim to hide. :18:

And I would do it all different. LOL Guppies in the 10, one Con in the 30 gallon and africans in the 45. That way you can add to your africans to make sure you have more females than males and you won't have HUNDREDS of Convicts to try to get rid of every couple of months.
