Rob (my husband) and I went to petsmart today and were looking around at the stock of Dwarf Gouramis when he came across some catfish he liked. He wanted to put a pair in with the gouramis when we set up the tank, and I was going to do some research to see if they would be okay with the gouramis...but I cant remember the name!!

They were silver, and rob actually thought they were some sort of a shark at first. He said they kind of reminded him of the bala's.
The only thing I remember is that they're silver (plain silver, no spots)...and that the name started with a P. I've ruled out the following 3 cats, Pictus, Pleco and Petricola. Other than that I think its gonna take forever to try to research for them, maybe one of you all might know what i'm talking about.

oh def. not that guy. It stays a lot smaller than that, and i'm positive that the name started with a P.

Sure? They are have a lot of silver on them, that picture doesn't do them justice and my LFS said they don't get that bit either.

Nope n/m thats not it either, just looks like that one. The ones at petsmart said they only needed 20 gal and only get upto either 2.5 or 4" long. cant remember exactly. but it does look similar.

I could not help myself LOL. When I done a search that was the 1st one that came up, next page I clicked on was in fact the iredescent shark as Drum pointed out.

Yeah that was funny :) lol I have no idea what it was called but the little baby pangassius came up and it looked identical to it. I'll have to run back out to petsmart and find out.

Pangassius is the same as irridescent shark. They hit about 2' at least (that is what I have seen). DO NOT look at Petsmart labels, they are wrong. I think they list the tank size needed for their current size, not their full grown size.

I was also going by the sizing on the label too....it said 2.5-4" long. Have no idea what it is, i'll let you all know what it is when I go look. And if it is a pangassius, I will be complaining to the manager for false advertisement.

2.5 - 4 feet is more like it :ezpi_wink1:

Don't go by their labels at all, just match the picture and check the price, outside of that just ignore it. And don't listen to the people (they just go by the labels, who do you think they are there for).

I should be getting a text from rob here soon with the name, he went out with his car buddies tonight and he meets by petsmart. So i'll have the official mystery cats name soon enough! hahaha :D

I'm ready to learn. I went today and the iridescent shark said 2.5-4" on it.:28: Man, they sure know a lot eh?

Lol, get em' Megan, tell them how it is. I would print off a piece of paper of how large they get and take it to the management.

Use fishbase.org for the most reliable info on natural habitat, max size, etc.

Oh I will be contacting someone about it. Those poor fish are being shoved in a bunch of 20 gals (give or take)...with customers not knowing any better. absolutely uncalled for. How freaking hard is it for someone to look up this information before going and stocking up the store with them. N/m i'm not even going to try to answer that question, b/c point is they don't care. Thats just how it is with stores like that. I will still be contacting them though.

okay, I just emailed the company, i'll let you know what they say when I get a response. I'm also going to be contacting the store itself.

I would if my LFS was doing that but mine just plain out tell you if it will outgrow it or not and 99% of the time they are right.
