Ok...so I bought this used very dirty aquarium at a yard sale. I have the tank, hood, florescent light, dolomite gravel, background, couple of plastic plants. This thing was a real mess. All the equipment was just laying down in the tank and it was so dirty that I didn't even look over the equipment there at the sale. I paid $10 for it all. I brought it home and pulled out the equipment, covered in crud and spiderwebs, emptied the gravel into a bucket. I scrubbed the tank inside and out and to my amasment...it truly looks like a brand new tank now. I took apart the hood and removed all the electrical components of the light and scrubbed it all. It too now looks like new and works fine. However when I put the hood on the tank I found out that it does not fit this tank. DUH...It's about 5 inches longer than the tank. So now I'm wondering just what size is this tank. It is 24" long x 12" wide x 20.5" tall. I used the calculator and it comes up with 25 gal? Is that right? I have a 20 gal tank and I have heard of 29 gal and 30 gal but 25 gal??? Also what tank would this hood fit on? It is 29" long. Also one more question....when I was rinsing out the dolomite gravel I could tell that this used to be a saltwater setup as the gravel had a strong smell of salt. Can I rinse it enough to use it in a freshwater tank? Or did I just get ripped off?
Thanks

You didn't get ripped off, the tank itself is worth the 10$. That hood is for a 29gallon. I am sure there is a 25 gallon and I am sure that is what you have. I would completely buy new substrate. What are you wanting to put in it?

24" is a 20g tank. regular 20g are 24" long.

that's an odd size. 29 gal is 30x12.5x17 20 high 24x12.5x17
take your measurement for the height on the inside to the lip that the top sits on

It's a "tall tank" I am willing to bet. This might have been for reptiles or something. Certain reptiles like higher tanks because they climb more on the stuff you put in there. In this case, if it's really a reptile tank you might want to see if the glass is tempered and can support the weight of water in it. Either way it sounds like at least a 20g which means it will be 160+ pounds.

According to the volume calculator on this site that is a 25g tank like Kuli said. I agree you should probably just ditch the substrate and buy new stuff. You got a GREAT deal to get a nice size tank like that for $10. Even if all the other stuff is unusable you got a great deal.

I have another 20 gal tank set up right now and this tank is taller. So it must indeed be a 25 gal size. I thought it was a 29 gal when I bought it. I didnt get a filter with it so I'll need to cruise this weekends garage sales to find one. LOL I might have to sell the hood on e-bay or look around for a 29 gal tank.

You can get a glass lid for it for about $12. The height of the tank doesn't matter when buying a lid. Just buy the one for a 20 gallon tank.
You don't have a high tank just a 25 gallon standard.

To get actual gallons on any tank, multiply all three dimensions (width x depth x height) and divide the result by 231.
