i bought this snail thinking it was an apple snail and last night I noticed that there are two baby snails that look just like it in the tank. I only have the one adult so i am trying to figure out how there are babies

looks like an apple to me. Hm. Have you bought any live plants recently? If so the babies could have come from those.

Looks to me like a japanese mystery snail, trapdoor snail, whatever you want to call it.

Cipangopaludina japonica

Is this it?

If so, its a live bearing snail, and a girl, and was probably fertilized when you bought it. I wouldn't expect many more babies until the babies you have grow up. They reproduce VERY slowly. Also in my experiences they do not do well in tropical temps. Great for cooler thanks and ponds. It can live for a decent amount of time in a tropical tank (mine averaged a little less than a year in tropical temps), but I noticed in warmer waters they tend to "hibernate" quite a bit, and the lifespan is drastically shorter. If it stops moving for more than 4-5 days, pull it out and give it a sniff. You'll know.

They do a decent cleanup job with leftover food and algae, and wont touch live plants (doesn't mean overfeed your tank now though). They seem to be very sensitive to nitrates. Just my experiences.

Also the shells are PERFECT for shell smaller shell dwellers.

I don't know, I think it looks more like a Blue Mystery Snail

The white shell and darkish body makes it look a lot like mine.

Do the babies look like this?

Because an egg sac may have hitchhiked on a plant and you have a few baby ramshorn snails.

My LFS also said "snail free" and low and behold my aquarium now has a healthy collection of ramshorn snails (which if you don't feed them, they'll eat your plants).

Or you can just remove them, they're not difficult to just pluck out of the tank and either toss em' outside or smoosh and feed to your fish.
