I am a new aquariast(?) starting 3 months ago with 2 calico goldfish in a 10L tank. I also bought a small snail as an algae eater. Unfortunately the last of my 2 goldfish recently died so I moved the snail to a 4L tank while I cycle the 10 L tank--I am learning how important this is. Anyway, in reading on the internet about snails, I'm not sure what type of snail I have. I thought it was a MTS but when I see the pix of an Assassin snail they both look very similar to mine. "He" is about 1/2" long, dark brown shell colour. I had a larger shell (approx 2") in my tank for decoration and he uses this as his home during the day. He will also bury in the gravel at times. He was quite active last night since moving him to the new tank a few days ago but tonight I do not see him at all. I unfortunately did not cycle the 4L tank before moving him but thought the shell he "lives" in would have enough bacteria to acclimatize him. I am feeding goldfish food. I tried a piece of spinach but he wasn't interested. I've also put in some crushed egg shells which I heated in the over at 325 degrees for 15 minutes for calcium. I hope all this will keep him happy. Any suggestions? (0 ammonia/7.6+ ph)

Assassin snails are striped like this:

They have a white "foot" that is the fleshy part of their body and I believe their shells have a wider girth than the MTS. Most photos I see of those have longer more slender shells.

Thank you, Trillanne, for the response. Looks like I have a Malaysian Trumpet snail then. He's out and about this a.m. so that is a good thing. I may try some other fresh vegetable to see if he is interested. Maybe zucchini...
