My purple bodied green-shelled apple snail i found today lying on floor of aquarium all shut up in his shell, and not moving at all. Ive watched him for 30 mins now, still nothing. Now i put him in my fish bowl and floated that in aquarium, and added one of my pleco's algae wafers. Is he alive? Sick? Scared? Whats a dead snail look like, ive never had a dead snail before, because ive never had snails til beginning of this year, and those two dont have any problems. Its just this new apple snail i added 2 weeks ago, the second apple snail i bought with him (i call all unknown gendered fish "him") is very lively and happy too. Im confused with this guy.

Sniff it, you'll know if its dead. Normally the trapdoor will open without any problem, or just outright fall off of they are dead. But the sniff test is the easiest and 100% sure way to tell. Nothing smells like a dead snail.

^^^^That is extremely true. Dead snails are another whole lot of stink!

Also, I have found the best thing to get it off of your hands is lots of scrubbing with lemon juice, just in case

My blue lobster that I had when I had my big tank completely devoured 1 of the big apple snails I had. Even then the shell smelt horrible.

Leave him for a day. If he doesn't move all day, you can probably assume he's a goner.

yea he was dead. He fell out this morning halfway, and he was all shrivelled up and nasty. I wonder why he died...?
